The Voice of Student Evaluation
Introduction
I’m Sarena McLean, Director of Research Services at SNJ Associates and the evaluation specialist for Jim at Everything Firearms Safety. This Voice of Student evaluation captures ongoing student feedback and delivers valid, reliable insights to improve Jim’s instruction, mentorship, and coaching as a firearms safety instructor for the province of Ontario. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyzed quantitative survey metrics, or the number/count data and qualitative open-text responses to provide actionable recommendations that enhance course delivery, student learning, and firearm safety outcomes.
Methodology
The evaluation uses a mixed-methods design combining quantitative survey metrics and qualitative open-text responses. Quantitative analysis examined response counts, ratings, and trends. Qualitative analysis coded open-text feedback to identify themes about instruction, safety practices, communication, and course materials. Data collection is ongoing; this report represents the first full analysis and presentation of aggregated findings.
Key findings at a glance
Students report high clarity in safety instruction; areas for improvement include pacing, hands-on practice time, and pre-course communication. Rating patterns show consistent strengths in instructor knowledge and mentorship. Open-text responses highlight the value of Jim’s approach and application of teaching and mentoring adult students. Aggregated evidence gives Jim targeted areas where the refine course structure and learning supports are identified by student’s as necessary. However, it is acknowledged the external stake-holders are the decision makers and responsible parties for that level of modification. Jim is committed to communicating and sharing this feedback with external partners should the opportunity arise.
Recommendations
Increase hands-on practice time and structured reinforcement through practice of safe handling as much as possible is a consistent request. Provide a concise pre-course checklist and expectations summary to improve preparedness. Student’s appreciate more space to complete their practical handling. Additionally, the non-restricted one day course is a very long day. Students appreciate both understanding that in advance and having meal and comfort breaks.
Benefits for stakeholders
For students — clearer expectations, more practice, and improved learning outcomes. For Jim and EFS — evidence-based guidance to refine instruction, strengthen mentorship, and demonstrate quality to partners. For potential EFS students, the feedback provides assurance about the quality of both the course and the instructor.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING

★★★★★
For anyone on the fence about taking this course, take this as your sign to book with Jim! I have 0 experience with firearms and wasn't sure what to expect with the course but am so thankful we booked with Jim. He may be a retired officer, but I think he was a teacher in his past life. After spending one day with Jim I felt much more confident with firearms and everything that comes with them. He kept the class engaged and ensured everyone understood the content before moving on to the next subject. He took time for people to write notes and thoroughly answered any questions. He managed to watch everyone while practicing on the firearms, and helped those who needed it (me) to ensure everyone felt confident and comfortable. While I only signed up for CFSC, I am already looking forward to returning to complete my CFRSC. Thanks again for everything, Jim!
★★★★★
Jim is the best! The course is a fantastic experience and it will teach everything you need to know.
★★★★★
This training course is billed as a "full day" and that is a very true statement. However, Jim's knowledge and engagement in the classroom and during the hands on exercises made the time pass effectively. Jim's experience and personal approach made everyone feel confident in building skills, asking questions and learning. It was clear from the start we were in good hands and that Jim wanted us to be successful in learning and developing safe practices when if comes to firearms handling.
★★★★★
Had a very educational and positive experience. I get testing anxiety and Jim took the time to explain everything, made it so that my second day was so smooth and a better experience. Lots of helpful information and hands on opportunities to get comfortable. Highly recommend!
Introducing Your Instructor
Jim, a member of the FSESO, holds certification from the Chief Firearms Officer of Ontario to instruct and examine both CFSC and CRFSC courses. His unwavering commitment ensures the highest standards of safety and knowledge, backed by his extensive experience as a firearms instructor, his expertise in adult education, and his role as an Educator and steward of The Elgin Military Museum's firearms collection. He collaborates with the Executive Director of the Museum to assist estate executors and family members in preserving the historical significance of firearms, providing an alternative to their destruction.
Jim is participating in the RCMP pilot project in Ontario, which tests the direct electronic submission of Students' Course reports. Previously, it could take 4-6 weeks to receive paperwork for the PAL application. However, in Jim’s first class where he submitted the Student Course reports electronically to the RCMP, students were able to initiate their applications in under a week after successfully completing the course.
